My work is a snapshot or an assemblage of mental images that speak to me. I collage pictures or reveries together, unremarkable moments that become significant through close attention to subtleties of light, color, texture, or pattern. I am fascinated by qualities of light, and irresistibly drawn to warmth.
I currently explore the astounding transience of nature, and I am impressed by how visual perception is influenced by times of day, seasons, temperature, even scent. The gifts of faraway cultures and history also greatly impact my approach to making art. I find myself consistently drawn to the decorative Art and Design of the Far East.
Another overarching concern is the power of gesture to communicate. My background in dance is recalled through the cadence and weight of line, very often exquisitely delicate. Some gestures appear as a personal lexicon, marks made as an invitation to be read as words on a page. One technique employs infinite layers of fine dashes of paint. I frequently combine media such as watercolor or gouache with ink, and I use gesso as a partial resist to inks and dyes. The process necessarily involves much layering; perhaps a figurative reference to what lies hidden, embedded beneath the surface.
I am more interested in exploring nature and emphasizing the intricacies it holds than in offering a representation of it. For this reason my work sometimes departs from conventional proportion and perspective. I draw from my imagination or memory, rarely from photographs. My work speaks of an interior life, not of outward appearances alone. Some work seems more like illustration, and I like that one can imagine the picture as part of a story unfolding.
The art I create expresses my experience of the world as a wondrous, mysterious and beautiful place. Through art I find access to what is good in life.
